She learned how to wrench through the need to be self supported through long races and endurance endeavors. She is passionate about sharing the love of cycling with others.
Kayla - @klayng_a_layng with The Common Wheel.
Perfect day on a bike: At a downhill park, zero climbing, and ends with a beer while sitting in a clear lake with 5-6 good lady friends.
Cycling world experience: She has been a member of the cycling world for 15 years. Started out commuting 40 miles a day motivated by dogs chasing her for 2 of those miles. Eventually leading to racing downhill in her early 20’s. Latest adventure was bikepacking in Scotland June 2023. She has been a professional bike mechanic for 4 years, but has 12 years of experience. Currently working as a bike mechanic and Programs Manager for The Common Wheel in Lancaster, PA.
When she’s not on a bike: Kayla is a part-time comedy script writer. She is also likely seen hiking with her dogs (Quill and Banjo) and her husband, Brian. Or you’ll see her at a show in Philly. She could also more likely be seen eating a pint of icecream at a gas station after bonking on a bike ride.
Cait - @caitlin.spelled.right - with Transition Bikes (@transitionbikes). Stoked to be coming back to Rooted! I moved to Bellingham, WA right after Rooted last year and started to work as a mechanic at the Transition Showroom/ Bike Shop called The Outpost. I now work as an inside sales rep for Transition and travel and ride in Canada and New England for work. I've worked professionally as a mechanic for 4 years but have been doing the work for 8 years prior to making it my career. My favorite wrenching projects are bringing old bikes back to life! I'm generally trying to ride steep tech trails. The jankier the better. After years of trial and error, I've unlocked some ways to have my bike perform better, so now I like to be "under-biked" most of the time. Yes, I'll ride the bike park on a 140/130 travel trail bike. It's fun. Most of the time.... If you want to talk suspension, I'm your gal. When I'm not biking, I'm dropping beats on the drums, playing heated card games with pals, looking at the forecast for sun, or hanging out with my cat, Bert.
Belle Amie with @brmwgnwrks- a cyclist for 13 years, has spent the last two years as a Cyclocross race mechanic in the US and Belgium. She resides in Pinkney, Michigan but she is from Australia. Her favorite activity is riding her Cyclocross bikes on mountain bike trails, but she also owns a hardtail and a full-suspension bike for days that require them.
Cooper - with The Bike Roost out of Boalsburg, PA. I have been a bike mechanic for 10 years and one of my favorite parts is helping other people develop their own love for bikes. As a mechanic, getting a sad bike happy again is the best feeling. I love teaching others how to care for their bikes and to feel confident about going out in the woods knowing they can handle problems that may arise. For me, there is nothing like taking off on my bike, into the forest with no plan and nowhere to be.
I have five children and have spent much of my life's cycling time on my "mom bike" with various seats, trailers, and half-wheels attached. Teaching each of my kids to ride and then later watching them head off into the neighborhood for bike tag with their friends are cherished experiences. They are all taller than me now so I get to have six bikes in my riding rotation and no tiny helmets in sight. Currently my favorite bike is probably my hardtail but it is hard to beat rolling out first fat tracks in fresh snow!
When I'm not riding or wrenching I play competitive rec league volleyball and love playing in the hot summer sand most of all.
